Paul Uhrig

Paul Uhrig

Healthcare Lawyer & Digital Health Executive | Former Chief Legal & Digital Health Officer, Bassett Healthcare Network

Paul Uhrig is a healthcare lawyer and digital health executive. He was the first chief legal officer of Bassett Healthcare Network, a rural health system in upstate New York, and served there as Chief Legal and Digital Health Officer. Before Bassett he spent 14 years at Surescripts as Chief Administrative, Legal and Privacy Officer, after serving as the company’s outside general counsel from its founding, and earlier he was a partner at Akin Gump.

He is the founder of Uhrig Health Advisory, which focuses on AI governance, regulatory policy, digital health strategy and interoperability, and is Senior Strategic Advisor to the Healthcare Trust Institute. He also serves on the advisory committee of Rainfall Health.

On Open Door Salon, alongside Eddie Qureshi of Rainfall Health, he described the questions health system executives ask before they buy AI, explained why pilots that succeed often never reach scale, and said that health data a patient puts into a consumer AI app falls outside HIPAA, which makes plain-language consent and enforcement the problems to solve. He also explained why ambient listening became the AI tool clinicians adopted fastest.
