David Crean
Founder & Managing Partner, Cardiff Advisory | Author, Dual Fluency
David Crean is founder and managing partner of Cardiff Advisory, a life sciences M&A and strategic advisory firm based in San Diego. He has spent more than 30 years at the intersection of science and capital, across investment banking, business development, mergers and acquisitions, and operating roles as a chief business officer.
Crean began as a scientist. He holds a PhD in biophysics and an MBA with a finance concentration, and he moved toward finance after watching technically strong programs succeed or fail on decisions about capital, strategy and transactions. His board service has included Histogen, where he was chairman and later lead independent director, Cenna Biosciences and Paracrine. He is the author of Dual Fluency: Bridging Science, Capital, and Governance in Life Sciences, which argues that science and capital have to learn to speak to each other.
On Open Door Salon, alongside Phil Vanek of the International Society for Cell & Gene Therapy, he argued that investors want a de-risked asset and a manufacturing plan rather than a platform story, ranked capital, reimbursement and manufacturing cost in that order, and explained why deals announced at JPM begin many months before the headline.
